It’s time for the American people to go back to work
Last year, critics of the federal government’s supplementary unemployment insurance said that increasing checks for the unemployed risked incentivizing people to avoid working.
And according to the executive vice president of the United States Chamber of Commerce, a poor employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics proves that they were right.
For many Americans, being unemployed pays better than working because of the $300 a week in federal supplementary wages, which falls on top of state unemployment insurance.
In other words, the government is essentially paying people to stay home.
“The disappointing jobs report makes it clear that paying people not to work is dampening what should be a stronger jobs market. We need a comprehensive approach to dealing with our workforce issues and the very real threat unfilled positions pose to our economic recovery from the pandemic,” said Chamber of Commerce executive VP Neil Bradley.
Of course, Biden is in complete denial over the problem. “Mr. President, do you believe enhanced unemployment benefits had any effect on diminishing a return to work in some categories?” asked one reporter on Friday. “No, nothing measurable. Thank you,” said Biden in response.
