Six GOP senators sided with Democrats on January 6th commission bill

On Friday, six Republican senators defied Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and voted in favor of legislation that would establish a 9/11-style commission to investigate the Jan. 6 disturbance at the United States Capitol.

Along with all present Democrats, Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Ben Sasse (R-Neb. ), Bill Cassidy (R-La. ), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), and Susan Collins (R-Maine) voted in favor of establishing the commission.

The six Republicans now face criticism and backlash from within their own party, with many Republicans seeing the attempt at starting a commission as another Democratic attack on Donald Trump.

Mitch McConnell made it clear that the GOP needed to present a united front against the commission bill. It’s a stance that surprised many conservatives, given the rocky relationship McConnell has with Trump.

With so many Republican voters still supporting Donald Trump, those six senators have some explaining to do back in their home states.
